International Yoga Day 2024 Live Updates: ‘World looking at yoga as powerful agent of global good,’ says PM Modi, leads celebrations in Srinagar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the International Yoga Day celebration from Srinagar today, asking people to make it a part their daily routine. The event was initially scheduled to be held on the lawns of the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre on the banks of the Dal Lake but had to be shifted indoors due to incessant rain.

What did the Prime Minister say? Addressing a gathering, PM Modi said that the world sees yoga as a powerful agent for global good as it helps people live in the present without carrying the baggage of the past. “When we are at peace within, we can also make a positive impact on the world… Yoga is making new ways of positive change in the society,” he added.

What is the significance of Modi’s two-day visit? Assembly elections are due in J&K this year and PM Modi’s trip assumes significance in this backdrop. It has not had an Assembly since 2018. In June of that year, Governor’s Rule was imposed after the BJP ended its alliance with the Mehbooba Mufti-led People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and brought down the ruling coalition.
